Gayatri Jayanti is believed to be the day when Sage Vishwamitra first uttered Gayatri Mantra. Gayatri Jayanti 2011 date is June 11. It is observed on the 11 day of the Jyeshta month – the Jyeshta Shukla Paksha Ekadasi day. Some people also believed that Goddess Gayatri, who is worshipped as Veda Mata (The Mother of Vedas), appeared on the earth on the day.Symbolically, the day celebrates Goddess Gayatri’s appearance in the form of knowledge to remove the ignorance. This knowledge was shared to the world by Sage Vishwamitra.

Goddess Gayatri worship is more of a community affair. Groups of people who are worshippers of Goddess Gayatri gather in a place and offer prayers and pujas under the leadership of a Guru or an elderly person. Chanting of Gayatri mantra is also held on the day.
